The American Trakehner Association (ATA) is committed to the selective breeding standards established in Trakehnen, East Prussia, in 1732, and being continued today in Germany "...to encourage the development of a riding horse of
beauty and harmony, great endurance, mental and physical balance, and possessing an excellent
character." By advocating selective breeding standards, maintaining a public registry, and encouraging
the use of Trakehners in public equestrian activities, the ATA expects to enhance the propagation
of the horse in America for the benefit of the public.
- 1. Inspections are required by the ATA Corporate Regulations to transfer horses into the Official
Stud Book of the ATA. Upon approval both mares and stallions are recognized by the German
Trakehner Verband and mares are automatically approved for the Verband Main Studbook.
Stallions will also be approved for the Verband Studbook if they complete the performance
requirements for the Verband Studbook.
- 2. Inspections serve to maintain minimum quality standards for the Trakehner breed.
- 3. Inspections inventory the ATA breeding stock and recognize superior individual horses.
- 4. Inspections help educate members on conformation and movement, and serve to help members
objectively evaluate their breeding stock.
- 5. Inspecting your horse provides confirmation of how well your horse fits the Trakehner ideal, which may
be helpful in marketing and selling your horse. It also allows your horse to be entered into the
appropriate Stud Book for breeding purposes. Many prospective buyers of horses are interested in a
horse's individual registration status.
Owners exhibiting horses in ATA Inspections are required to:
- Be Active Members of the American Trakehner Association
- Have a completed and signed Application for Inspection on each horse.
- Paid all required inspection fees in advance of the inspection.
- 1. All horses except foals at side and weanlings applying for inspection are required to have
registration certificates with the appropriate breeding registry. Weanlings require at least
a pending application for registration.
- 2. Trakehners, Anglo Trakehners and Arab Trakehner horses are required to be registered
with the American Trakehner Association.
- 3. Thoroughbred horses are required to be registered with the Jockey Club.
- 4. Purebred Arabian horses are required to be registered with either The Arabian Horse
Registry of America, the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry or the World Arabian
Organization.
- 5. Anglo-Arabian horses are required to be registered with either The International Arabian
Horse Association, or the Canadian Partbred-Arabian Registry.
- 6. Shagya-Arabian or Anglo-Shagya horses are required to be registered in a stud book
member of the International Shagy-Araber Gesellschaft e.V. or the Internationale
Purebred Shagya-Arab Society.
- 7. Thoroughbred and Arabian horse owners are required to submit along with application, a
complete 4 generation pedigree plus a racing record report indicating the horse’s:
- Racing record report showing number of starts, placing and total earnings or
- Racing record report from same organization documenting a horse did not race.
- These reports are available on-line at www.equibase.com for Thoroughbreds or
www.arabdatasource.com for Arabians.
- 8. A negative Coggins test plus a veterinary health certificate for each horse is required to be
provided to the host at each inspection site and is to accompany each horse indicating they
show no sign of infectious diseases to help protect the horses of fellow members. The
ONLY exception to this requirement is a state where intra-state transportation does NOT
require a negative Coggins test.
- 9. Owners of stallions applying for inspection are required to obtain veterinary examinations
and radiographs (X-rays) of the stallion in advance of the inspection. See ATA website for
protocol and details under Stallion Inspection Forms.
- 10. Minimum approval scores were changed in 2006.
